February 2009 – Policy Governing Access to Supreme Court of Canada Court Records

Counsel and litigants are advised that the Office of the Registrar of the Supreme Court of Canada has issued a policy governing access to Supreme Court of Canada court records that will come into effect on February 9, 2009. For more details, visit the Policy for Access to Supreme Court of Canada Court Records.

Pursuant to this policy, the Supreme Court of Canada will be posting on its website the electronic version of factums on appeals filed on or after February 9, 2009.

Parties will be required to provide an electronic version of a factum that omits personal information about an individual, information that is subject to a publication ban or any other information that is not part of the public record. The policy addresses this in further detail, as do the Guidelines for Printed and Electronic Versions of Appeal Documents.

For further information about the policy, please contact Barbara Kincaid, General Counsel, at reception@scc-csc.ca. For information about the electronic filing guidelines, please contact Julie Laverty, Manager, Registry Services, at 613-996-7810.
