The Civil Code of Lower Canada comes into force.

Emily Murphy becomes the first woman magistrate in the British Commonwealth.

1947

The Canadian Citizenship Act comes into force. Prior to this date, "Canadians" were simply British subjects living in Canada.

William Lyon Mackenzie King is issued the first Canadian citizenship certificate on this day in 1947 and becomes the first Canadian citizen.

1974

The Honourable Jean Beetz is appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada as a puisne judge.

The Honourable Louis-Philippe de Grandpré is appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada as a puisne judge.

1979

The Honourable William Rogers McIntyre is appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada as a puisne judge.

1980

Ernest Cormier dies at the age of 94. He is the architect who designed the Supreme Court of Canada building.

1994

The new Civil Code of Quebec comes into force.
