The Act of Union (1840) comes into force, unifying Upper and Lower Canada.

1905

The Honourable John Idington is appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada as a puisne judge.

1907

Ronald Martland, who will be appointed puisne judge of the Supreme Court of Canada in 1958, is born in Liverpool, England.

1947

Louise Arbour, who will be appointed puisne judge of the Supreme Court of Canada in 1999, is born in Montreal, Quebec.

1982

Ronald Martland retires as a puisne judge of the Supreme Court of Canada.
