Cairine Reay Wilson is the first woman appointed to the Senate of Canada following the Persons' Case of 1929. It is not until 1982 that a woman is appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada.

William Rogers McIntyre retires as a puisne judge of the Supreme Court of Canada.
