The Canadian Citizenship Act is passed in the House of Commons. For the first time, Canadians will no longer be citizens of the British Empire and will have their own nationality. This act comes into force January 1st 1947.
1984
Jeanne Sauvé is sworn in as Canada's 23rd Governor General. She is the first woman to hold this office.
