1791
The British parliament passes the Constitutional Act of 1791. This act divides Canada into two provinces: Upper Canada (Ontario) and Lower Canada (Quebec). Each province is given a legislative assembly; however, these assemblies do not have financial autonomy. In Upper Canada, British legislation is applied exclusively, while in Lower Canada, French civil law and English Criminal Law are applied.

Michel Bastarache, who will be appointed puisne judge of the Supreme Court of Canada in 1997, is born in Quebec City, Quebec.
