The British North America Act (now the Constitution Act of 1867) comes into force. This act unites Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario, and Quebec into the Dominion of Canada.

Viscount Monck is sworn in as Canada's first Governor General.

1946

Rosalie Silberman, who will be appointed puisne judge of the Supreme Court of Canada in 2004, is born in Stuttgart, Germany.

1954

The Honourable Patrick Kerwin is appointed Chief Justice of Canada.

1954

The Honourable Douglas Charles Abbott is appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada as a puisne judge.

1990

The Right Honourable Antonio Lamer is appointed Chief Justice of Canada.

2002

Claire L'Heureux-Dubé retires as a puisne judge of the Supreme Court of Canada.
