May 9, 2025 · Outreach and education

Chief Justice Richard Wagner was delighted to participate in the 10th triennial Congress of the Association des cours constitutionnelles francophones (ACCF) in Bucharest, Romania earlier this week. Hosted by the Constitutional Court of Romania, the theme was “Interpreting and revising the Constitution: The role of the constitutional court”. Sharing the Canadian experience, the Chief Justice spoke about the ways in which the Supreme Court of Canada considers a variety of perspectives when resolving constitutional questions. This ensures the Court renders judgments that reflect the reality of our country today.

The ACCF brings together 50 constitutional courts and equivalent institutions from Africa, Europe, America and Asia. The Supreme Court of Canada was elected to the executive of the ACCF for another 3-year term.

While in Romania, the Chief Justice met with the President and other members of Romania’s High Court of Cassation and Justice. He also met Canadian Ambassador to Romania, Mr. Gavin Buchan, as well as representatives from Romania’s National Institute of Magistrates, the Directorate for European Affairs and civil society.
